Sheila Pepe and Carrie Moyer Workshop

As project lead and producer, I collaborated with artists Sheila Pepe and Carrie Moyer to develop a drop-in art project in conjunction with their exhibition. Building on my experience as the former manager of the Skirball Art Studio, I worked with the artists to translate their ideas into an accessible, self-guided visitor experience. Inspired by their residency in Italy and their integration of decorative art objects into their work, we devised a project that invited visitors to create sculptures using paper cutouts derived from decorative objects the artists encountered in Italian museums.

I oversaw the project from concept through installation, collaborating with museum preparators to design a shelving system for displaying visitor-created sculptures and incorporating a space for participants to title their creations. To accommodate different learning styles, I produced both a video tutorial and printed instructions. I also worked with the artists to develop a wall installation of photographs and videos documenting their time in Italy, providing context for the workshop and connecting the activity back to their artistic practice.

This project exemplifies my ability to work closely with artists to translate their ideas into engaging participatory experiences. Because the Workshop was designed to function without a facilitator, I needed to balance conceptual depth with practical considerations: the activity had to be intuitive, engaging, low-mess, and accessible to visitors encountering it independently. The resulting installation extended the artists’ ideas into a participatory format while allowing visitors’ own creations to become an evolving part of the gallery environment.
