Surrealist Play
As the creative producer and content creator for the Surrealist Play workshop that accompanied the Surrealism: Play Gone Astray exhibition, I sought to immerse visitors in a whimsical environment where they had agency to co-create a dreamlike world. My role involved conceptualizing how visitors would engage with the space and collaborating closely with the designer on the visuals.
"I sought to immerse visitors in a whimsical environment where they had agency to co-create a dreamlike world."
At the heart of the workshop were a variety of magnets in diverse sizes and images, that empowered participants to compose surreal arrangements against the Giorgio de Chirico inspired trompe l’oeil backdrop. The space also included a collaborative mad lib-style poem that ignited visitors’ imaginations as they filled in blanks with unusual three-dimensional objects scattered throughout the space.
The workshop also featured alcoves with illustrated architecture that concealed secret doorways, inviting visitors to discover new and unexpected worlds. To ensure a seamless transition from the exhibition to the workshop, I developed a gallery guide that included playful surrealist games, commentary and imaginative prompts. Surrealist Play was an invitation to embrace the absurd and explore the limitless potential of the human psyche.
